Finally printed out my current fav design on a 24 x 36 mounted poster - Combining my love for Typography and Photography, Font-O-Genic is born. Using Photoshop’s Displacement Tool, my tweets and words reflecting design are wrapped around the subject’s body. The trick is creating a displacement map from the original photo. The video tutorial for this project is one of my highest ranking videos on Vimeo.

Check out the wine label I created - ChaiONE likes to give wine bottles to their new clients, and needed a custom wine label. I created a clean and simple label in Illustrator. It simply states, “Looking forward to working together - Team ChaiONE”

So I checked out this tutorial Typographic Portrait. It shows you how to take a portrait and have text wrap around the subject (in mine a woman) using some blending tools and the displace tool in Photoshop. Overall the tutorial was good, it heads you in the right direction. However I did notice in the comments people having trouble with following the tutorial so I decided to give it a shot.


Around Step 5 is when it started to get a little hairy for me, so I ended up carrying out techniques that I already know for Steps 5 - Step 8, to complete the final photo.


I plan to do a video tutorial on it hopefully today and get that posted, and that way you all can try completing this project again.


What I like about this, is notice how the text only appears her skin, not in her hair or on her dress. This gets accomplished by the displacement tool as well as changing the blending mode of the layers.


Something else that would be fun, would be to go and remove the tattoo from the back of her neck, so that there is skin all the way down. This would be fun because there are a lot of shadows going on in that area, so I would have to pay close attention to shading and lighting when removing the tatt.

People think having text in the Justify format is okay. Well it is not, it makes it hard to read the sentences, screws up the reading pattern. Why? How? You can’t tell where 1 sentence stops and the next starts. Sure it looks clean and pretty, but it sucks functionally. Go ahead compare a block of Justified text next to a block of text that is simply Left Justified. Which block of text did you follow along with your finger as you read?

People keeping asking me to repost this vid. I’m happy so many of you liked it and are able to use it and learn from it. So here it is again. The people demand it, so I supply it. Ne on the look out for my next vid to premier sometime later this month, maybe around the end of the month.

Quickie CD Cover I made using #Photoshop. I used the direct tool to create the custom font. The way the tail of the “f” in “loft” came out nice. Originally the tail dipped far onto the couch, so I used the direct tool to bring the tail up to curve just along the back of the couch, above the open book. I also used the direct tool to narrow the width of the tail on the same “f” so that the tail sat right in between “sounds” and “of”. I used some Emboss and Beveling styles to create the metallic finish. To add an extra bit of pa-zah, I could text and create a fake artist name, and have it clipped around the figure of a man or woman, so the name would take on a body sitting or laying on the couch. Might do that later for kicks. ` I also altered the “l” in “Loft” next to the “E” in “THE”. Checked out this iPhone app called “What the Font” it was more like “What the F***”, it pretty much sucked. Your suppose to be able to take a picture of printed text using the app, and upload the image. It’s then suppose to tell what font the text is and give you a few close matches of the font that resembles the font in the picture you took. It got them all wrong when I used, along with others that tested it out. Some fonts were pretty simple I feel such as “Times New Roman” it got that wrong. Reportedly the website guesses the fonts wrong as well. The suggestions te app comes back with did not resemble the font I took a picture of in any way. It could totally be a great app for designers, if it only it worked.
