Adobe Illustrator: Pen Tool Tip

Ever have the problem where you are using the pen tool and the cursor looks like an “X”, instead of the normal pen tip icon?

Did you try resetting the work space, restarting illustrator, and even restarting your computer? (more than once)

Yea, I have been there and done that. Real simple fix…

Check to see if you have “Caps Lock” on.

  • If the “Caps Lock button is on, turn it off and your pen tool cursor will once again look like a pen tip

“Caps Lock” is not on.

  • Go to “Edit”
  • Then got to “Preferences”
  • Now go to “General”
  • In the Preferences window that pops up, uncheck “Use Precise Cursor” (as seen below)

First time this happened to me, I shut down Illustrator and restarted it. Then I tried resetting the workspace. Then I shut my computer down and the stupid “X” was still showing up as my pen tool. Drove me nuts, “what happened to my pen tip icon?” I kept wondering to myself… Come to find out, I just needed to take the “Caps Lock off” and change my cursor settings.
